⚖️ As a legal nurse consultant, I often find myself immersed in the complex and often tragic stories of my clients. These cases often involve trauma and require a deep understanding of mental health issues. 🪷
🏥One of my last DME exams included the client’s unexpected expression of vague suicidal ideation and lingering hopelessness as a result of a debilitating injury that occurred in the midst of the pandemic and severely negatively impacted his family. 👪
🌳Also recently, while watching an episode of “Finding Your Roots,” I discovered an unexpected connection to a Revolutionary War hero that resonated with my own experiences.
The episode featured Michael Douglas as he explored his family history. To my surprise, I recognized the name John Nielson, his maternal 4th Great Grandfather. Nielson was not only a Revolutionary War hero but also an advisor to George Washington. Intriguingly, just a few weeks prior, I had stumbled upon Nielson’s statue while on an assignment in New Brunswick, NJ. 🥁

Watching “Finding Your Roots” provided me with a deeper understanding of Nielson’s life and legacy. It was inspiring to learn about his contributions to the American Revolution.

However, the episode also shed light on a darker aspect of his life – his ownership of enslaved people.
This revelation was both shocking and saddening. It highlighted the importance of acknowledging the painful truths of our history, no matter how uncomfortable they may be.

👩🏼⚖️ I am often called upon to help clients navigate the aftermath of traumatic events. My experience as a mental health nurse has equipped me with the skills to understand and address the psychological impact of trauma. 🤝
📑 Experiences such as this serves as a reminder that we are all interconnected in ways we may never fully understand. It also underscores the importance of empathy and compassion in our relationships with others.🫂
