Puerto Rican People: Passion, Purpose, and Power

Puerto Ricans are some of the most jubilant, compassionate, generous, creative, and loyal friends, coworkers and fellow citizens with whom I have ever had the privilege and joy to befriend, work, and heal.

I have been reflecting on the hundreds of memories I have involving my Puerto Rican colleagues and the infinite energy they have in skillfully and sensitively comforting those around them, especially those with behavioral health needs.

I also am reminded of the weeks I spent in New York following September 11, 2001 (My September 11 Remembrance). The specialized “unit” I was assigned to there, was primarily staffed with about 30 other Red Cross volunteers, who left their families came to New York from Puerto Rico, and stayed for weeks, sometimes months, to join their fellow citizens in rebuilding and restoring our nation.

Their camaraderie both in and out of the hospital, have made my professional and personal lives infinitely better and more rich.

I invite you to join me in celebrating the resilience, compassion, and unwavering spirit of the Puerto Rican people. Their contributions to our communities, both in times of joy and hardship, are immeasurable. As we continue to navigate societal challenges, let us be inspired by their example and work together to foster a more just and equitable world.
