“I’m not so good with the advice… Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”

In the spring/ summer of 2022, I had just left my last hospital administration job of ten years, reeling from the continuing effects of COVID, the turbulence of internal changes at the facility, and now struggling with figuring out next steps at this point in my life. I took some time for myself and (re)watched “Friends”. Of course I had seen every episode before, many times, but this time was different. I found myself laughing harder and crying more than ever before.

Chandler Bing is one of the most relatable characters on the show Friends. He is known as much for his sarcasm as he is for his loyalty to his friends. He is also very self-aware of his own flaws, which makes him even more likable.

Chandler is always there for his friends, even when they are making mistakes. He is the first person to offer help or advice, and he is always there to lend a shoulder to cry on. Chandler is also very loyal to his partner, Monica. He loves her unconditionally, and he is always there for her, even when she is being difficult.

In the episode “The One With Ross’s Denial,” Ross goes through a breakup and is having a hard time coping. Chandler is there for Ross every step of the way, even though Ross can be difficult to deal with. Chandler knows that Ross needs his support, and he is willing to be there for him, even when it is not easy.

At one point, Ross says to Chandler, “You’re the best friend a guy could ask for.” Chandler replies, “I know.” This shows that Chandler is aware of his own good qualities, and he is proud of the friend that he is.

One of the things that I loved most about Matthew Perry was his authenticity and advocacy about substance use disorder. I found Perry’s willingness to talk about his addiction to be incredibly inspiring and in alignment with my professional work. Perry’s advocacy for people in recovery has also been very impactful. He has helped to raise awareness about this issue and destigmatize addiction.

I found Chandler’s sharp wit to be very relatable. I often use humor to cope with difficult situations. I also found Chandler’s heartfelt compassion to be very inspiring. He is a true friend who is always there for the people he loves, even when they’re making mistakes.

Watching Friends during difficult times in my life, and especially this one, helped me to heal in many ways. It helped me to laugh, to cry, and to be extra grateful for the loyal tribe I am lucky to have surround me.

I think it’s a fitting tribute to Matthew Perry to say that the show Friends makes the world a better place. It brought joy and laughter to millions of people, and it taught us important lessons about self-awareness, friendship, love, and resilience.
