Hearts & Habitats: How Healing the Earth Heals You!

Happy #MotivationalMonday and #EarthDay!

This Earth Day, Let’s Protect Our Hearts and Our Planet!

As a legal nurse consultant, I see a concerning link emerging between environmental health and cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have found microplastics, tiny plastic particles, present in the arteries of people undergoing surgery. These patients were 4.5 times more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, or death within a few years. See: Busting Balloons: Billowing Bane of Birds, Beasts, and Blood Vessels

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are less than five millimeters in size. They have been found in many parts of the human body, including the placenta, blood, heart, liver, bowels, lungs, stomach, feces, and breast milk. A study of over 200 people found that nearly 60% had microplastics in a main artery, and those people were 4.5 times more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or die within 34 months than those without microplastics. While more research is needed, this is a wake-up call. A healthy planet is key to healthy hearts. This #EarthDay, let’s commit to small changes with a big impact:

  • Ditch single-use plastics: Pack a reusable water bottle and shopping bags to reduce plastic waste entering our environment and potentially our bodies.
  • Embrace the outdoors: Nature is good for your heart and mind! Take a walk and soak up the fresh air.
  • Educate yourself and others: Share what you learn about environmental health and its connection to public health. Knowledge empowers us to make informed choices.

Remember, every little bit counts. Let’s work together to ensure a thriving planet for healthy hearts and future generations.
