Linen Larceny Leads to Legacy: My Crash Course in Crisis Consulting!

🏅This #WednesdayWins post goes out to a memory that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of my clinical practice!

🚿It all started 15 years (and two days) back, on the extended acute psych unit, when a patient in crisis ripped the sink right off the wall. 💪

🌊 Water was flowing everywhere, threatening to flood the administrative offices below. As my colleagues described, “you came flying in and started giving direction while throwing linen everywhere, slowing down the flooding.” 🚱

💭Looking back, that linen cart incident reflects so much of what I value as a clinical leader. First, it highlights the importance of being present during a crisis and actively participating in resolving it. 🦺

🪷Second, as the code director, I was able to guide the team in a way that minimized any escalation of the patient’s agitation.

🫸🫷 Finally, it’s a testament to the open communication and trust we had on our nursing team. We worked together seamlessly to ensure a safe outcome for everyone involved, and afterwards, we debriefed in a way that acknowledged both our skills and the connection we shared.

📃 This certificate, and the context of the experience for which I received it, even recently made it into a webinar I participated in, titled “The Importance of Policy Development and Treatment Planning in Meeting the Standard of Care for Preventing the Use of Restraints in Psychiatric Facilities.”

🗓️ And now, fifteen years (and two days 🙄) later, it has been entered into the legal record 🏛️and is officially part of my expert portfolio!!👩🏼‍⚖️🎉
