Wayne Simmonds, a trailblazing hockey player and personal hero of our own undefeated superstar Leonna Elizabeth, recently announced his retirement from the NHL. His career spanned over a decade, and he is widely respected for his talent and his work to make hockey more inclusive for all.
Though Simmonds faced racism throughout his career, he didn’t let it discourage him. He became a role model for young players, showing them that they could succeed in hockey despite whatever challenges they face. He also spoke out against racism, using his platform to raise awareness and fight for change.
Simmonds’ contributions extend beyond his individual accomplishments. He helped pave the way for a more diverse league, inspiring a new generation of hockey players who look up to him. His legacy will continue to inspire future athletes as they work to make hockey a welcoming space for everyone.
By working together, we can create a more welcoming environment for everyone in hockey and beyond.
“I’m playing the game I love,” he said. “For me, I’m just trying to set an example for kids who are like me, who have been in my situation. They can look up to me as an example. If I can make it, they can make it, too. When I was a young kid, I looked up at people as inspiration. Willie O’Ree was the first African [-Canadian] to play. He was my goal.” (https://andscape.com/features/flyers-wayne-simmonds-is-trying-to-add-some-color-to-hockey/)
(And remember, whenever you miss a #Motivation Monday, tenaciously transition to #TardyTuesday). Even Wayne, a hockey legend, faced challenges. But he persevered, inspiring others. It’s better late than never to skate toward your goals.)
